So we have the 15th Doctor. A new one, this time a black man, makes his first appearance in the Christmas special. The church on Ruby Road.
Within the plot, it's simple. The new Doctor also meets a new companion. This is a young blonde woman in her early twenties, who will accompany the Doctor on his adventures from the Christmas special onwards.
What is this episode about?
Nineteen years ago, a masked woman drops off a baby outside a church. In the present day, foundling – Ruby Sunday – tries to find her biological parents using a DNA test, but to no avail. After speaking with Davina McCall, Ruby discovers that she has repeatedly experienced unnatural bad luck, and has several encounters with the Doctor. After her adoptive mother Carla becomes the foster mother of another child, Ruby witnesses the child being kidnapped by Orcs, boards their flying ship and attempts to rescue her, meeting the Doctor again. While in the Orcs' captivity, the Doctor discovers that the Orcs are manipulating time to cause Ruby's bad luck, feeding on coincidence – specifically, the fact that Ruby and the baby share a birthday on Christmas Eve. The Doctor and Ruby rescue the baby from being eaten by goblins and return it home to Carla. However, the coincidences that connect the Doctor and Ruby lead to the goblins going back in time and eating Ruby as a child. The Doctor uses the TARDIS to go back nineteen years and rescues Ruby as a child, destroying the goblins and their ship in the process. Returning to the present day, the Doctor reunites with Ruby, but leaves in the TARDIS. Ruby, however, concludes that the Doctor is a time traveller and decides to accompany him.
What makes the new Doctor different from the previous ones? His youth, his enthusiasm, also his unorthodox clothing (different every time) and, most importantly, the fact that he will have perhaps the youngest companion, Ruby, who has a very mysterious backstory that will surely be revealed, or at least part of it, in future episodes. And who her mother actually is, we don't know, hopefully we'll find out:
