Karel Šíp: Icon of Czech Show Business

Karel Šíp celebrates his birthday on June 1. The well-known bassist, presenter, humorist, scriptwriter and lyricist, has made his mark in the history of Czech music and television with his multifaceted talent and long career.

Karel Šíp (* 1. June 1945 Prague-Bubeneč; birth name Karel Jan Feuerfeil) is a prominent figure in the Czech music and television scene, working as a bassist, presenter, humorist, scriptwriter and songwriter.

early life

Karel Šíp was born an only child. His father, Karel Hugo Šíp, real name Karel Hugo Feuerfeil, was an operetta actor and singer in Ostrava theatre, who changed his name because of his artistic career.

Study and First Work Experience

Karel Šíp graduated from the Secondary Industrial School of Film in Čimelice, where he graduated in 1963. He subsequently worked as a producer at Czechoslovak Television from 1963 to 1973.

Musical Career

In 1971, he founded the band Faraon, which was known for the singer Jiri Schelinger. The band released several singles, including the hit "Pigeon House". After Schelinger's departure in 1973 to František Ringo Čech, the group broke up. Karel Šíp then stopped focusing on music and focused on television entertainment.

TV Career

He came to the attention of television viewers by hosting the show Hitsarada from 1978 to 1986, which he co-hosted with composer Jaroslav Uhlíř. This programme was followed by the show Galasupershow. He also hosted shows such as Klip klap and several television variety shows. On TV Nova he hosted the shows Horoskopičiny a Skopičiny, and Rozjezdy pro stvězdy. Together with Jiřina Bohdalová, he hosted the show Za oponou s Jiřina, later called only Za oponou.

Collaborations and Creations

Šíp also collaborated with comedian Josef Alois Náhlovský and wrote many song lyrics. He has worked with Karel Gott (songs such as "Čau lásko", "Krev toulavá", "When a man has breakfast with a woman"), Petra Janů, Petr Novák, Václav Neckář, Daniel Hůlka, Hana Zagora and Leona Machálková.

Current Activities

He currently hosts the talk show Všechnopárty, which has been running on Czech Television since 2005. He has also hosted the TýTý poll several times in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. He travels around the Czech Republic with the show Miniparty.

Personal Life

Karel Šíp has been married twice. His first wife was the singer Marcela Holanová, with whom he has a son, Karel (* 1981). With second wife Iva (* 1975) he has a son, Jan (* 2003). He also had an illegitimate daughter, Hanna (* 1982), who died in 2002.
