For the first time, we have a film of Bob and Bobek coming to theaters. What does it bring us? Well a brand new story that continues the nearly 100 part series Bob and Bobek. After the death of lead artist Vladimir Jiranek and two World Championship Ice Hockey Championships, the two rabbits in hats return to the cinemas once again.
It's more of their debut, as the cinemas have only ever had their complete episodes with the past few seasons, and under new creators who created the World Cup graphics they've once again delved into a story that is designed to appeal to the child population.
After Josef Dvorak, who has been with the series since the umbilical cord, the roles of Bob and Bobek have been taken up by the Hádek brothers, who are sure to continue in new series. They are, after all, a generation and half a generation younger than the original dub of the two rabbits. The Hádek brothers handle their roles with respect and reference to the original dubber and so the transition between the new and old dubbers is unrecognizable.
Another element of the new film is the new director and creator. The new creator is in fact Martin Skam Krejčí, who has taken over the reins of Two Rabbits from Jiránek. I think he's done a great job. Jiránek's animations are too outdated by now. The translation to modern times was too good. It's not very easy to take the reins after so many episodes of a series and after "cult" creator, but he did it.
I must remind you that the modern era is very much in favor of rabbits and this is really the first take on a cult classic series that brings old characters into the modern era. You know what I'm getting at? Well, how about Quatrefoil, which already had two movies, or Pat and Mat, who only had a collection of episodes in the movie. Let's not forget Hurvin, let alone The Mole, who have done themselves a great disservice with their new version (in film and television).
Bob and Bob actually made the first film that properly reimagines the new versions for the modern age. The animation is modern, tested by two championships hockey. People liked it and why not maybe make a movie that is modern and can entertain a new generation of kids.
It worked, my kids enjoyed it and I think they may enjoy the series (if the creators make it). The stories of the two rabbits were modern and the story of On the Trail of the Carrot is the first one that should be continued not only with a series, but also maybe in a few years with a second movie.
I think it is the right movie for a December movie screening. Not just for parents who are raised on Kings, but for kids who find the new take better than the original series.
