Sherlock – The Last Case (S04E03) – 85%

What's the finale to the 13-part series? Well, something big to shut up all the bullshitters.

Well, Sherlock is a long-running story that has had weaker and better episodes. The best episode that came out last year was the one that focused on the historical era. This year's most recent episode, on the other hand, is dedicated to modern technology and the fact that Sherlock is really on his last (maybe, just maybe) case.

An adversary he wasn't expecting at all shows up, but has in previous episodes, in small but important scenes. And now evil is pitted against Sherlock, Mycroft and Watson. All three are up against an adversary who's been in the background for all 12 episodes. The only thing that connected him to the Holmeses was Moriarty.

As I wrote in the previous episode, Sherlock in the modern era has become a science fiction Sherlock, where there are real things and plots, but unfortunately half of them are fictional and things from the future.

It's no longer about the lead detective of the story solving a complicated case, which he solves by deduction and following details. His life is on the line and he's not the man he was supposed to be. He doesn't pay attention to the important details and the intricacies of the plot are over his head.

There is an antagonist who is even more of a sociopath than we expected. He's very easily able to influence the people around him, and so his every move is even more planned than we'd expect.

The shift away from investigating more complex cases that Sherlock could easily solve is very noticeable. Anyone expecting the same as in previous instalments will not be disappointed.Sherlock and Watson tackle their respective threats, which may involve their history and future. But once they've solved the problem, they return to solid ground once again and, on the advice of Mary, who speaks from beyond the grave on the DVD, they return to 221B Baker Street to solve their cases.

The thirteenth episode is the best of the season, closing this year's chapter that began with the death of Watson's wife. This time, it doesn't end with any crossover or unsolved case that could continue into the next season. The creators have managed to wrap up the series in a meaningful way, and so the next season will be truly at the fans' great request.

Perhaps the creators will decide to tackle the unsolved cases of the London underworld so that Sherlock will have something to do again, or it would certainly be useful to have some of the episodes return between the 13 episodes, where the story would bring together some elements of both Watson and Sherlock Holmes' lives that we haven't seen during the series and have happened in the background.
