The Gray Man – 70 %

So as of yesterday, the latest film from the directors of Avengers is on online services, namely Netflix. They've been paid an exorbitant amount of money for it, $20,000,000 in total. The film was shot in Prague, and I recognize the locations from Prague, as a local native, three-quarters of the way through the film.

The main character is a mercenary who works quickly and secretly. He's very successful at his job and it's only because his superiors are getting meaner that he gets into a spiral of fighting for his life.

His main antagonist, is a cocky even bigger and badder mercenary who has lost all inhibitions and is left with nothing but destruction and debris.

The first star is Ryan Gosling, who can already pull off his movie. And he's succeeding. He can play the main character as an action "brawler" with no problem.

The other star who stars in this film is Chris Evans, who absolutely relishes his bad guy role, and you can see in the actor that he went into this film to play a flighty and very evil character who uses his mind to kill, torture and show his superiority.

Let's not forget Ana de Armas, who has once again returned to her action role from the last James Bond film. The last star we know from the big movies is Billy Bob Thornton, who plays an old mentor who lives only for his niece.

It's clear from the film that this is a book adaptation. I haven't read the original book yet, but hopefully I'll be able to get it. Therefore, I can't compare the movie to the written story. The screenwriters (Joe Russo, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely) I think failed to do a good job of adapting the book. They set up several action sequences for the film that last long enough. You'll enjoy the action on a plane, in an old Croatian castle on the water and, of course, in Prague's Jan Palach Square, where you'll also experience an action chase with the famous Skoda 14T as part of the story.

Unlike the Marvel movies, the famous brothers have broken free from the chain. We get to enjoy a few drone raids on the action-packed battlefield to show us the action from a new perspective, but unfortunately, the film loses clarity thanks to chaotic editing and unsequenced scenes.

Let's not forget the dialogue scenes. Unfortunately, they seem to have been taken from the book and thus very much "rustle" the paper and unfortunately don't fit the film. Unfortunately the makers didn't decide whether the film should be an action film or a dialogue film.

For me the film is a disappointment, I was expecting it to be another successful film where I would be properly entertained, unfortunately it didn't happen. It's a good thing the film didn't go into theaters, it would have been even more criticized and vilified. The Russo brothers made another action movie that will sadly soon be forgotten and get bogged down in other new releases.
