What can happen when a human with valuable blood gets caught in the middle of a war between vampires and lycans (werewolves).
From A long time ago, in the century before last, there was once a Count Dracula who sucked his victims to death, drained their blood and lived out his life in a coffin... And one of his possible relatives is Selene, a vampire who wears a leather outfit and is very sexy. This young girl, though it's questionable how old she really is, has been fighting lycans (werewolves) for the last couple hundred years. Her fight is not in vain, many werewolves have been killed. But many vampires have been killed by werewolves. But that's not what this story is about. In the very time this movie is about, there is a man – Michael, who has blood so rare that werewolves and vampires alike lust after him. Because through his genetics, a combination of vampire and werewolf can be created that is indestructible.
But it's also mostly a love story when the vampire Selena falls in love with the human. Our sweet human is bitten by a werewolf, and now we have a Shakespearean story. Of broken and unhappy love, of curses, fates, and the necessary steps that must be taken for human, vampire, and werewolf species to survive.
Underworld is the first directorial and partly screenwriting effort from Len Wiseman, who, like many famous and infamous auteurs, threw himself into the film business to make a name for himself. And so he took his cues from the Matrix, Blade and comic book movies. Like the already classic bullet time, slow motion, he also used exquisite leather outfits suited to the female body, latex masks and action.
Actress Kate Beckinsale, who rose to fame as the nurse in Pearl Harbor, has been cast for the role of Selena, who is expected to wiggle her ass nicely in a leather outfit and occasionally kill someone. And she does that. Another character is Lucian, who was cast by Michael Sheen, who is the best actor in this film. Also in other roles are Scott Speedman, Bill Nighy, Shane Brolly, Robby Gee, Erwin Leder, Wentworth Miller, Sophia Myles, and others, who are just playing such the rest of the vampire and werewolf characters who serve the purpose of being killed off as soon and as best as possible. Either with a bullet, a bitch, and anything else that can be used to murder members of the clan.
How about the movie? Well I was just expecting something similar to Blade, but unfortunately Underworld is just a weak concoction with a simple story, with characters who have nothing to play and just get action massacred.
