Man of Steel – 75%

After thirty-five years, Superman returns once again. Under the creative supervision of Christopher Nolan and the direction of Zack Snyder. It's a hilarious film, but it has a few kinks that bring down its quality. Zack Snyder is a very capable director, and his 300 and other films have a very distinctive stylization. Christopher Nolan's Superman was produced as an action film. It's basically a big reboot for the modern age.

If it were to be compared to Star Trek, it's less for fans of its comic book counterparts. David S. Goyer is the court screenwriter for Batman, and that's a big influence on the film. As a character-driven Superman movie, it's not. When J.J. Abrams allowed the return of the character and their stories in the Star Trek reboot, Star Trek fans praised the new concept, saying that the film had characterization and story.

Superman versus Star Trek didn't choose to be a big reboot. He forgets any history and shapes his story and established characteristics, falling in love and other connections with the characters, without remembering any film that came before.

The villain, played by Michael Shannon, is well chosen, but in terms of action and characterisation it would be bad if he wasn't played well. Fortunately that didn't happen, the actor was chosen well and managed to find charisma in the villain. The other characters, unfortunately, no longer have such strong stylizations compared to the negative character that would go well with the story. While David S. Goyer has a history of good films, this time he opted for action at the beginning and long action at the end, so any important story lines were cut short. They are admittedly in the movie Flashbacks, where they use Kevin Costner to explain Superman's good American qualities, which then influence his reactions and character. But these don't add much to the overall story.

Not that it's a bad film, but a completely standalone film with no continuity to previous history isn't entirely good. What's missing then are fans who can enjoy the new take on the characters. Superman may still be the same, but the story between Lois and him is damaged by the fact that Lois Lane knows who Superman really is from the start, and the journalism for Clark Kent doesn't start until the end of the film, and other things that deviate from the original concept of the story.

Unfortunately, by only being about the big action that could have been in a film other than Superman, the film is a bit weakened compared to the other films. Hans Zimmer's music is unfortunately uninteresting and only action. I really expected that at least the characteristic Superman march would return at some point, unfortunately it doesn't. There's not even a theme I can think of that I can recall, as with modern Star Trek. You can't distinguish the film by the music, unfortunately.

I'd love to give the final film the best film of the year, but compared to this year's films, Man of Steel is behind Star Trek. Unfortunately, Christopher Nolan has made another Batman film as producer. With no references for fans of the previous films. All the important stuff is done only through battle and destruction of world property.
