Creators Radek Beran and David Lisý bring the well-known story of the Proud Princess in a new animated treatment that combines nostalgic elements with innovative technology. The animated version preserves iconic moments from the original film, adds new characters, and visually revives the magic of the familiar tale for audiences of all ages.

Creators of the animated film The Proud Princess

Radek Beran - Screenplay and direction

Radek Beran (1968) graduated from DAMU in puppetry. After graduating in 1991, he and his classmates founded the theatre group Buchty a puppets, where he is still active. He is involved in puppet theatre for children and adults and has participated in various theatre projects and films as a puppet actor. He has also worked at the Miroslav Ondříček Film Academy in Písek and at the DAMU in Prague. As a director, actor, producer or assistant director, he has worked on films such as Pinocchio, The Lullaby, Cookie Returns and The Little Master.

The Challenges of Adapting The Proud Princess

Beran enjoys working with adaptations and has experience in theatre. In his words, adaptations are about adhering to certain boundaries, which in this case was enjoyable due to the quality of the original work. "When we analyzed the original film, we found that it was still excellently crafted," he says. For example, the iconic scene at Maiden Rock was able to be visually enhanced thanks to 3D animation. Audiences can look forward to quotes from original catchphrases such as "Found, not found" and "Tie my shoe," which were incorporated naturally into the animation.

What the new version of the classic tale brings

The new retelling of the more than 60-year-old film combines nostalgia with modern animation. Familiar iconic moments from the original film, such as the log ride and the sword dance, are brought into the world of the animated characters. The creators hope that this new version will delight both children and adult audiences.

David Lisý - Directing

David Lisý (1974) is an experienced director, animator and storyboardist with over 20 years of experience in animated films and series for adults and children. He has extensive experience in directing, 2D and 3D animation and puppet animation. He has worked on projects such as the series Booba, the film Marnie's World, the feature films Journey to Impossibility, The Blue Tiger and Alois Nebel.

Exceptional elements of the animated Proud Princess

The characters in new version are inspired by the look of the original actors Alena Vranova and Vladimir Raja. The animators wanted the animated characters to resemble the original actors, paying homage to the classic story. The animated version also brings new characters - cute animals that children love. The main villain, Maximus, originally played by Miloš Kopecký, has been given more space and he looks even more menacing.

The difficulties and challenges of the animated adaptation

Adapting a well-known fairy tale has its advantages and challenges. "The story is already set to some extent," says Lisý, "but it's important to bring your own creativity to it so that it's not just a remake." The animated film took three to four years to produce and a total of 150 people worked on the project, with one second of animation taking an animator a full day to create. The creative team hopes the result of their work will delight audiences of all ages and offer a new take on a beloved classic.
