After Rhaenys' death, the kingdom is wracked with grief and uncertainty. Rhaenyra faces her limitations in a time of war, while Daemon dreams of royal power. A small council elects a new regent and the city gates close to prevent escape. In the background, secret missions and searches for the dragonriders take place, while Aemond considers the cost of his position.
The death of Rhaenys and its aftermath
Corlys, Rhaenyra, and Baela mourn the death of Rhaenys. Criston marches with Meleys head through the streets of King's Landing, but the starving people take this as a bad omen. Aegon survives but is in a coma and badly burned, while Sunfyre is presumed dead; Criston conceals from Alicent what really happened during the battle.
Daemon's dreams and Rhaenyra's confession
Daemon dreams of incest with his mother, who calls him her favorite son. Rhaenyra admits he has no experience with war. Although Alicent insists that she should rule, the Small Council elects Aemond as regent because Alicent is a woman.
Aemond's measures and Jeyne Arryn
Aemond orders the city gates closed to prevent Hugh Hammer and his family from escaping. Jeyne Arryn tells Rhaena that she wanted an adult dragon for protection instead of the two young dragons she was given.
Jace's mission and Mysaria's espionage
Jace flies to the Twins and wins the allegiance of House Frey in exchange for Harrenhal. Mysaria gets Rhaenyra to send Elinda to King's Landing as a spy.
Daemon's ambitions and problems in the Riverlands
Daemon declares that he will rule as king once a large enough army is raised; he sends the Blackwoods to ravage the Bracken territory as Alys predicted and force their allegiance, but the people of the Riverlands condemn him.
Aemond and Helaena, Rhaenyra's Fears
Aemond stares at the Iron Throne while Helaena asks him if it was worth it. Rhaenyra regrets that her faction lacks dragonriders, but Jaecaerys says that descendants of the Targaryens could be found in other houses; they decide to research the genealogical records.
