At the Wall, Jacaerys visits Cregan Stark to ask him for allegiance to Rhaenyra. After much persuasion, Jacaerys finally gains Cregan's consent to entrust several men to her. Their meeting is interrupted by the arrival of a raven, which brings Jacaerys news of the death of his brother Lucerys.
At Dragonstone, Daemon demands that Rhaenys accompany him to King's Landing and kill Aemonda and Vhagar to avenge Lucerys. Rhaenys refuses and insists that Rhaenyra be allowed to grieve for her son first. Rhaenyra flies off to Stormy End. She walks the shore and finds the remains of Lucerys' dragon Arrax.
In Driftmark, Corlys meets Alyn, the man who saved his life in his fatal shipwreck in the Stepping Stones. Corlys thanks Alyn and declares that he is indebted to him.
At King's Landing, Alicent sleeps with Ser Criston before they head to a small council meeting together. During the meeting, Aegon enters with his son and heir Jaehaerys and causes a commotion. The council discusses war tactics in anticipation of Rhaenyra's reaction to Aemond's actions. Larys then talks with Aegon privately, and subtly suggests that Aegon appoint him as his new Hand of the King to replace Ota, who has been Viserys's Hand for years.
Mysaria arrives at Dragonstone and is accused of conspiring with the Hightowers. The demon orders her held in dungeons and calls her a traitor to the crown. Later, at a Black Council meeting, Rhaenyra announces her revenge on Aemonda. Jacaerys returns to Dragonstone and brings news that the North has promised 2000 soldiers for his mother Rhaenyra's army. Later, in response to Rhaenyra's wish, Daemon offers Mysaria her freedom in exchange for help in recruiting two assassins in King's Landing.
Daemon sneaks into King's Landing and meets with a City Watch guard (nicknamed "Blood") who despises the Hightowers. Blood leads Daemon to a rat hunter ("Cheese") who is knowledgeable about the tunnels beneath Red Bastion. Daemon bribes them to kill Aemond, and they agree, but also ask what they should do if they can't find Aemond. After entering Red Bastion, they actually fail to find Aemonda. Eventually Syr meets Helaena in her chamber with her two children, Jaehaerys and Jaehaer. Blood finds them as well. As they discuss whether to kill Jaehaerys, one of them mentions that Daemon said "son for son". Helaena, while stunned with fear, answers Cheese's question about which of her children is the boy. Right after she points to Jaehaerys, they both decapitate him. In response, Helaena grabs Jaehaerys and flees to her mother Alicent's chamber, where Alicent and Criston lie together in bed.
