In ancient times in history, there was a Time Lord, he saved the world, died several times, and regenerated until after his last death he regenerated into a woman. The new Doctor has lost her ship, and only after one short chapter on Earth and one chapter on the planet "Damnation" does she find her blue police box.
As I wrote in a previous review the new Doctor is having a really hard time, after so many episodes with men, getting her regeneration up to the quality the whole series demands. The 50 years of history is undeniable and it's really hard to find new stories and plots that won't repeat themselves.
The story of the Doctor and her three companions is getting harder and harder to come up with, yet the creators are inventing more stories around the main couple, the trio… 4 main characters. This time, it's a simple story about the final journey of two racers who are close to the finish line, and their space journey will be capped off with a shared finish.
The new Doctor is still confused about where those times are, when previous Doctors threw themselves into solving their journeys with the verve and determination to take on death and save the planet and their friends. The new Doctor is still uncertain about what she actually knows and what she can solve. Her path is simply unexplored, and the change from x men to a woman is not an easy one for the Doctor.
After the second episode, we know who will also be the main villain of the series. That will be the Manhunters – a Stenzan warrior race for whom it's important to find a marked person to kill (hunt down), an alien...Of course, that won't be in every story, but we'll definitely meet them in the final episode of Season 11.
This time around, the second story of the modern Doctor is more hilarious than the previous one. One comes to trust the Doctor more and gradually comes to like her companions, who are each very different and complement the Doctor.
The story about the final race is also hilarious. How are you supposed to get to know people's characters like that... other than in a race to the death. The final pair of racers are also good and their dialogues are also worth a look.
Let's not forget the planet on which the final race takes place. It's not a dead planet, as it seems, but there are many dangers awaiting the 7 people (Time Lord 4 people 2 racers) who manage to successfully overcome them.
What are we expecting in the final minutes? A new Tardis... and there she is, new, rerendered and waiting for her pilot in time and place.
It's clear that Doctor Who is again very different from the previous one. The female version of the main character suits him and gives him more of a feel, which will be even more interesting to people as we learn a bit more about the Time Lord's life and the things that have marked his history during previous reincarnations.
