I don't even remember the first time I saw SpongeBob. Probably on an old computer in DivX. I would have been 24 by then. I feel like it was in the '90s. American movies didn't reach us and the theaters were full of completely different movies.
Since then, another third of my life is behind me and I'm going to see SpongeBob again. This time with my wife and a clear idea of what kind of off-the-wall humor to expect. That show is now on Novak Entertainment (Smichov), so every night I get a sigh of relief from another world. From the animated world of Still Life Bikini, starring the lives of all the sea fish, the crab, the starfish, the squirrel in a bathyscaph and most importantly the sea sponge in square pants. The best burger in the marine realm.
The second SpongeBob movie continues in the established style of all the TV episodes and, of course, the first movie. The humour is unfunny, terribly fast-paced and, most importantly, every now and then there's another joke, both visual and spoken. We watch a steady stream of funny moments from the main characters' stories.
For more than half of it, we watch an animated adventure under the sea, and it's not until the end that we get to the real world, when all the desires of the fans have been fulfilled and the jokes we've been primed for are built up to the point of absurdity.
Anyone who knows at least one episode of SpongeBob on TV knows the main negative character. That's Plankton. His negative role is replaced by a pirate played by Antonio Banderas. This famous Spaniard is already taking any bark he can get. It's quite possible that he's also a fan of the show, but I think a less famous actor would have been perfectly fine, as the animated characters overshadow him considerably.
Animated 3D sequences don't hurt. It's good that they made the classic animated series (below the surface) flat animated and that there's a whole 3D space above the surface. So with 3D glasses, there's a lot to look at, not only the 3D SpongeBob characters, but also the Transformed Super Characters from Bikini Lounge. The filmmakers have successfully transformed the characters' traits and desires into their Superman variations.
The whole film is therefore very humorous, and those who seem to find SpongeBob's characteristic humour have a madcap good time. Admittedly, the film is certainly not going to appeal to everyone, but my wife and I enjoyed it.
