Like every movie this year that didn't get released until March, the new Spongebob didn't make it to theaters. Many films have been pushed back, but a few have made it to online movie theaters to realize their success in the world of home theater.
So the third Spongebob is on online movie theaters, that is, on Netflix, and immediately after its premiere, it's number one in the country.
What the , is that? Spongebob is a "sponge" that has had its own series since 1999. It didn't come to the Czech Republic until the first film in 2004, where I watched, and at the time didn't understand SpongeBob, David Hasselhoff as the star of Coast Guard. I still didn't really understand the famous and unique character of American TV series at that time. It was only with time that I came to understand, and I grew to love his good heart and his friends.
I went to the second film on purpose, and I enjoyed his serial humour in the cinema. Enjoyed another cameo by Antonio Banderas, and I enjoyed that third episode after many serial episodes today. Cameos feature the celebrated Keanu Reeves as well as the "star" Danny Trejo or Awkwafina.
What's today about? Those familiar with the series know that in addition to the usual friends, Partick, Sandy, Mr Crabs, Sepia, and possibly Plankton, Spongebob has his favourite snail. The snail gets lost and SpongeBob's owner has to find his pet snail. A story so simple that you just have to enjoy it all the way to the end of the movie.
Yes, this year's movie is full of humor and how SpongeBob good-heartedly goes across the sea to find his pet. He has all sorts of adventures, learns all sorts of good things about his friends until he reaches his destination.
Spongebob is a movie to unwind, it's a lot of a break from the everyday stresses of life to watch it. If you're used to evenings on Nova Gold/Comedy Central, you know what to expect. The dubbing doesn't disappoint, once again we have our favourite Jan Maxián, Jiří Krejčí and Jana Páleničková. Antonín Navrátil makes a welcome addition, and Ladislav Županič excels as Krabs, the better replacement for Bedřich Šetena.
For a fan of the laid-back and terribly good-natured Spongebob, I recommend the film. And for those other fans who want to take a breather and drain their brains into the sea, too. For there's nothing better than a sponge having his friends the starfish, the cuttlefish, the crab and, let's not forget, the land squirrel.
It's just a great shame that the film's main creator, Stephen Hillenburg, didn't live to see his next film, having died at the age of 57 from the insidious Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The entire film is dedicated to his memory.
