Star Trek: Discovery – Season Three No Longer Addresses Star Trek Canon

So I'm through the first 5 episodes of season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. And it's really something to watch again. The first season was about getting to know the crew and the main characters, the second is Spock, and the third is about the future.

The creators have successfully solved the biggest problem of the first two seasons and plunged the main characters into the distant future, so we can safely dispense with the "controversial" theme of the whole series (the cannon problem with the other Star Trek series). It's a good thing nothing should happen now that contradicts what has happened in the past in other series.

Main character Michael Burnham and his crew find themselves in a future that isn't as good as it should be. In one episode we're introduced to Michael's future, in the second to her ship, and it's not until the third and fourth that we're introduced to new characters that are important throughout the season. I'm naming especially the new crew member Adira, who/who acquired her symbiote Trill under very wild conditions and took the entire episode to come to terms with her history. He is a human, not a Trill, with whom the symbiote can easily communicate. Let's not forget the cameos that appear in cameo roles. We know Jake Weber from Medium and the biggest star so far is David Cronenberg, who has his star moment with Empress Philippa Georgia.

And the fifth episode is about how the Federation actually exists, and the problems it has with actually being officially defunct and having to start over.

Star Trek: Discovery is one of the most expensive shows, it shows. No blurry smudges, no bad tricks. Just quality comparable to the movies we've seen over the decades.

The main characters are still pretty good, and we either like them even more or they start to annoy us even more. In fact, the whole series is slightly controversial, and for taking place in the same storyline, there have been a few controversial moments that have thankfully been explained, or will be explained. Let's not forget that, already in the modern future, some of the characters are „genderless“.

In the first two series I skipped some episodes because they stopped being interesting to me, I only watched the ending, which was the most important one. This time around, I'm taking the time each week to watch the appropriate episode and see how we're approaching the main plot.

I personally hope we get to the main plot soon, because we've already had the crew introductions, the introduction of the future, and now I'm sure the next episodes will reveal what's actually important.

The third season that started 4 years into the first season is the best season for me. We don't have to deal with the characters' past, present and conflicting things, the future is different and suits the Discovery's ship.

Late in the first half of the series I therefore rate it 90%.
