My first encounter with the Star Trek phenomenon was once in Tabor when my grandmother was watching German RTL, I was very young and it was the 80s and it was an animated Star Trek, I didn't understand it at all. The second encounter was in the 90s when Nova and Prima were tussling over who was going to broadcast Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. And so the best memory I have of the Star Trek series was the Star Trek series: The Next Generation, with the famous Captain Picard.
The main star of the 1990s TV phenomenon returns in his early 80s. The question is whether the Star Trek series can continue on into the new millennium. After the much-criticized Discovery, which took Star Trek to a new dimension after 29 episodes, the 2nd most famous Captain Jean-Luc Picard is back.
To start with, the show is very slow and there are important things happening in each episode, so relax, it's just about the actors, how they can play it. The star actor Patrick Stewart alone can pull off the series and every moment he has is an acting gem. The other actors are complete unknowns, perhaps Alison Pill is the 2nd most unknown. The trailer before the premiere promised the return of several actors across the series. Data (Brent Spiner) has them just barking, and it wasn't until the 4th episode that another familiar character, Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) appeared. Other promised characters will probably return at the end and will definitely only appear for a short while.
So what are the first episodes in the series about? About how a girl gets murdered by Romulans and she's not just any girl, she's an android (one of the few left), she has a sister and most importantly she's one of the reasons why the famous Admiral Picard goes out of his vineyard and into space again to look for the "horrifying" reason why colonies on Mars (and other planets) were destroyed by androids helping humans. His friend Data (more like B4) has had to be deactivated and Picard's life of retirement and living in the seclusion of his vineyard is meaningless.
The new Star Trek series is one of the best of the last few years. You can see every dollar spent on the series that manages to make the world feel absolutely real. The creators from computers and masks have created a series that stands on everything people love. The Star Trek series has always been one of the rich shows that didn't skimp on the gimmicks, so the new era is making everything even more perfect.
We don't get much of a story during the first 5 episodes, and by the halfway point we don't know anything at all. Maybe some traitors, the secrets of the Federation, and that Picard is still feeling his Borg personality a bit, but nothing more. It's really very interesting how the story shifts and how important the Borg cube actually is in Romulan territory.
What can I say? Compared to Discovery, which I didn't enjoy after a few episodes, I still enjoy Picard and it's much better. It's just a lot better. The main credit for this goes to Patrick Stewart himself, who presents his native country (the UK) at its best. And that's with acting that continues the Shakespearean tradition. It's not a bad thing when actors from Britain appear in America. Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kenneth Branagh follow in the footsteps of Patrick Stewart.
Star Trek: Picard is this season's best sci-fi series, and I hope some of the country's TV stations will take it upon themselves to start airing some Star Trek on a regular basis, now that they've reprised the "competition" of Stargate SG-1
