In a galaxy far, far away, again? Well, yes, it's been more than 40 years since the first movie came out. Most of the early actors have retired and the other half are no longer with us.
So come new characters and new stories. In the previous episode, we said goodbye to Skywalker on the secret island of the last Jedi. Leia escapes with the Resistance and Snoke plots his dark plans further.
New director and writer Rian Johnson, who is only 45, has managed to make an excellent sequel. He takes everything good from the previous installments, but manages to come up with a script that no previous installment copies.
J.J. Abrams set a bar in the previous installment that is hard to surpass, but it was done. The new director, who was brought up on Star Wars, has memorised all the important things Star Wars fans like about the franchise and put more invention into the eighth episode than anyone before him. He was also able to justify to his producers many of the changes we're not used to.
For example, sacrificing many important characters for the good of the film. It is also one of the few films where it is necessary not to give away any of the spoilers, as that would deprive us of unexpected surprises.
The film's cast hasn't changed much, so everyone knows how to play their character properly. From Mark Hamill to Billie Lourd. The new characters, Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern, fit right in with the runaway train, which runs as well as a French express train.
The film is helped along by John Williams and his distinctive score. By finishing the film a year before its release, the composer had plenty of time to bring out the best in himself. Combined with the characters and the intricate story full of twists and surprises, it makes Star Wars 8 one of the best episodes of the film.
The show goes on and on and you can feel the love for the subject matter and the script, combined with the actors, is exactly what Star Wars fans could have asked for.
Some fans may say the film is too long and complicated, but without the story digressions, we wouldn't have enjoyed the perfect ending.
For me, this is the movie of the year, and I still have the urge to go see Star Wars: The Last of the Jedi one more time, maybe even more, to notice even more important details, winks, and the constant battle between the light and dark sides of the force.
