We'll put the Joker's girlfriend (Harley Quinn – Margot Robbie), the universe's best marksman Deadshot (Will Smith), and other now-less-famous villains into Suicide Squad. In their roles, we'll cast young stars who've already had a few famous movies under their belts, but haven't yet managed to find a movie that makes you say, that guy's a famous actor. After the duo of Margot Robbie and Will Smith, it's lower-light star Joel Kinnaman, who rose to fame with the remake of Robocop. We mustn't forget Scott Eastwood, who is already pulling out the stops for his father.
Because this is the world of Superman and Batman movies at the same time, we can't forget that there may be cameos. The most important one is the return of Batman, who plays a very minor, but still important, role, and the second cameo (after Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice) has the Flash.
David Ayer is the director of such hits as Ironheart and S.W.A.T., so the producers managed to find a director who, in addition to directing, also masters the craft of screenwriting. The fact that the director has written his own script is really to the benefit of the film. He really knows how to get his actors to embrace his vision, which, within DC, stands out.
That Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice wasn't as successful a film as expected, we all know by now. The second film in the Superman world, this time starring bad guys, was a success. It's a fresh and playful film that you'll have a lot of fun with. It's not hurt by the touches or the cameos by Batman, who unfortunately I have to ignore, played by Ben Affleck. I guess Ben Affleck has gotten fat, or maybe it's his new suit that makes me not trust his action at all. At least I trusted his older take on Batman in the latest Superman, but not at all now. That's my only complaint about the film.
The cast, from Will Smith to Joel Kinnaman, has made a good group that shows mutual support and cooperation. The CGI tricks (I don't believe Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was just masked) and the appropriately chosen masks combined with the precise details of each character complement the whole bunch. The whole Harley Quinn thing is exactly what you'd expect from the film, and the little things, like the plush unicorn for Boomerang and the whole Joker character, are not forgotten.
The fact that the Joker is being played by a third actor in 30 years doesn't matter. After Heath Ledger, Jared Leto has taken over the Joker, playing his negative character in his own way again, but he's also pretty manic, and to the character of Harley Quinn, he's exactly the dark lover he should rightly be.
The story is again about the destruction of an enemy who is not of this planet, but unlike other films, the story is interspersed with digressions in the plot that give us reasons why the world is actually as destroyed as it is. And it also guesses at the main characters' reasons for actually being able to come together for the good of the world.
The late half of the film's story is devoted to gradually revealing the characters, piece by piece, explaining its origins, and why they got to stop the world. The story also has its self-sacrifice and death for the greater good.
The music was provided by Steven Price, who, in addition to being director David Ayer's court composer, is also an Academy Award winner for Gravity. Not much original music was composed for the film, as it's mainly a song soundtrack that dates back to the 80s.
The two hours of fun and relaxation went by awfully fast, much faster than Superman, so I recommend seeing the film if you want to fix your mood after the previous film in the same universe.
