The Simpsons – Monty Burns‘ Fleeing Circus – 60 %

The Simpsons season 28 premiered, so we'll briefly review what it brings. A little bit of good-natured humor, a little bit of Mr. Burns history. And, of course, a minor subplot to extend the story.

I personally think Burns' childhood should be a topic that really deserves a full episode. There is only a short amount of time throughout the episode devoted to the main theme, which is already known. The main part is devoted to the present.

Of course, nothing happens around Burns right at the beginning of the episode. There's a classic humorous intro, in which a plot twist that changes the normal state of Springfield justifies a story that culminates in a good deed at the end of the episode.

It's a shame that the creators didn't leave Homer alone and devote the second synchronized story to his episode at the nuclear power plant.

The episode felt somehow disjointed to me, not just focusing on the main theme underlying the entire episode. Of course, there were some good moments that I laughed at, for example the symbolic return of Edna and Maude was a delight. But some of the jokes were a bit awkward, like immediately in the first few minutes, when it was obvious that the creators of this episode were trying to artificially increase the length of the episode to fit into the 21 minute minimum.

They also artificially increased the length of the episode with the opening theme song, which is about a minute and a half long.

For these reasons, I have to rate the episode only 60%. The level of the episodes keeps dropping, but it's still entertaining, but not as much as I'd like, it's probably not the disinterest of the writers trying to make the level better and better, rather, it's that there are so many episodes already that it's hard to keep the same quality in each episode.
