It's a question of whether or not the return of movie star David Tennant and his acting partner Catherine Tate should be an asset to the new chapter of the Time Lord series. Personally, I think it's quite a boon, because what better way to entice a big change in the show than with star actors.
The second episode of season 14 brought us to the end of the universe this time. The point is that even at this end of the universe, danger lurks and the demise of the universe is possible. The simple premise of a mysterious ship and its mysterious mission.
The creators have set us up with a really interesting "monster" episode, with both the Doctor and his girlfriend Dona playing the lead. It's their acting gig and their chemistry with each other alone makes this episode worth watching. Gradually during the episode it is revealed that not everything is what it seems, and so the pair really have to work hard to make sure everything ends up the way it should. With the hope of saving the world and of course their lives. Not to forget the cameo by Bernard Cribbins, for whom this episode (filmed in 2022) was really his last acting appearance. A tribute to his memory.
It's a shame, though, that the 14th reincarnation (i.e. David Tennant) will only have 3 episodes. The third episode will be the farewell episode and it seems the most stellar. Neil Patrick Harris should appear as one of the biggest antagonists. So I really hope it's a proper farewell to the most interesting Doctor.
My rating for the episode: 90%
PS: Rumour has it that both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, the other Doctors, will return to poison the new Doctor played by Ncuti Gatwa. Do you think this will be the right thing to do? And do the old Doctors have them coming back sometimes? And what about Amy Pond?
